Volunteering Roles

slideshow

We are always looking for more volunteers who would like to get involved. Whether you wish to be a Driver, Guard, Signalman or just help with the general maintenance, you will be working alongside a friendly group of volunteers sharing the same experience.

If you can help we are looking for volunteers to train in the following areas:

Guards

Guards do a very important role on our trains, If you're over 16 you could train to be a guard and help look after the safety of the passengers on one of our trains.

Our Guards learn how to couple the rolling stock, and maintain a safe environment for our passengers.

Drivers

Do you want to drive a 7¼" Gauge Train?

During public running, we often haul trains of up-to 40 passengers at a time. We operate a fleet of diesel, electric and steam locomotives. Once passed out as a guard and you have a full understanding of the signalling system, you will be able to train to be a driver capable of driving one of our Locomotives. If you are over 16 and would like to find out more about training to become a driver for us, please get in touch.

Platform Duties

During busy weekends and events, we require the use of responsible volunteers to manage the loading and despatch of trains. This role is perfect for our junior members or for those volunteers who just want to be part of a friendly team of volunteers.

After being fully trained, you will be responsible for managing the safe running of the station and the flow of passengers, assisting passengers with boarding and disembarking the service, checking tickets and dispatching trains. A responsible volunteer will need to be confident, polite and be able to deal with the general public of all ages, face-to-face.

Signalman

The trains at the Railway are routed by our a 3 signal boxes using full sized equipment, rescued and restored by our volunteers.

As a Signalman, volunteer you will be responsible for the managing the flow of the railway and service, allowing up to 8 trains running safety on the track. Training is given for this role and once qualified you will be in charge of an important safety critical role.

Supporting Services

We rely on our volunteers to run and manage our ice cream parlour, tea room and our Pocket Money Toy Shop providing pocket money item for our visitors.

Santa Special

Our Santa Special in December each year relies heavily on our members and volunteers, it takes a lot of preparation, organizing, purchasing, present wrapping, erecting the Grotto and actually running the event on the day.

Again if you would like to help, we are always looking for volunteers. to assist be that in the tea room or as Santa or one of his helpers

Engineers

Although mostly 'behind there scenes', but often seen at the forefront of the railway are our Engineers. An absolute vital role as without the dedication of our volunteer Engineers, there would be no railway. There are always jobs to be done and if you can help - there is a place for you. We are looking for people to help in all areas including carpentry, mechanics, metal work, air systems, and hydraulics.

and there is more...

If you have any skills you would like to put to use and would like to join a friendly team of like-minded Volunteers - there is always a place for you at the railway. Gardening, decorating, staff refreshments.

If you would like to help, why not pop along to the railway any running day and speak to our volunteers who will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

So come along to one of open days to find out more or come to one of our working party days on a non track day Sunday.
