Ground Level Narrow Gauge Locomotives

James 0-4-2T locomotive James – In service starting 2019.
'James' is a new build which will be ready for the 2019 season. This engine 0-4-2 tank engine was built by one of our members, and has taken 15 years to complete working in his spare time. The model is based on the well know Tinkerbell locomotive design to UK narrow gauge practice.

The locomotive is seen here durining initial trials in December 2018.

'Douglas' is a model of a 2ft gauge South African 4-4-0 locomotive number NG104 built by the Falcon Railway Plant Works, Loughborough, England in 1896Douglas – In Workshop - Overhaul
is a model of a 2ft gauge South African 4-4-0 locomotive number NG104 built by the Falcon Railway Plant Works, Loughborough, England in 1896 for the Biera, Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways which operated from the Port of Beria in Mozambique to Marandellas in now Zimbabwe a distance of 328 miles. She was built over 5 years by the late 'Tom Snoxell' our then President and early founder of the club. Douglas was finished and commissioned in 1983, Douglas has run for many years at our railway. Douglas now belong to the Society.

Douglas is now in the workshop for its 10 year overhaul it should return to service hopefully later in 2018.

Hunslet No.85 is a scale model of the Hunslet Engine Company's 2-6-2T locomotive of 1902. Hunslet No.85. 'Jack' – In service
is scale model of the locomotive on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway. The original locomotive was built for the Serra Leone Railway in Africa, by Hunslets in Leeds. Jack Rowlands built this wonderful 2-6-2T Hunslet 85 and is seen here behind the locomotive, with Martin who looks after the locomotive. The loco is now jointly owned by the society and a society member. The loco named 'Jack' as recognition of builder and founder club member and past president.

Jack has just had it new boiler fitted in 2017 and is expected back in service Easter 2018.

Russell a WHR locomotive

Russell a WHR locomotive – In service
Russell is a narrow gauge steam locomotive originally built in 1906 for the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways (NWNGR), but most famously associated with the original Welsh Highland Railway (WHR)

Russell is a 2-6-2T locomotive dating orignally from 1906 and was orignally built by Hunslet Locomotive company.

This is a scale model in 7½" gauge with Charles its owner.

Hunslet 'Susie-M' is a scale model of the Hunslet Engine Company's 0-4-0ST locomotive of 1898. Hunslet 'Susie-M'  – In service
This is a scale model of the Hunslet Engine Company's 0-4-0ST locomotive of 1898. These locomotives were originally built for the slate mines in North Wales. She was built between 1980 and 1990 to drawings supplied by John Milner of Milner Engineering Chester by Mark Adlington Scale is 3.25" to 1ft. and the boiler works at 100lbs sq inch. She was first steamed 1991 and run every season to date. The locomotive has outside frames, cylinders and cranks with inside valve gear of Stephenson link motion and Festiniog style tender.

Romulus Amy Amy – In Workshop - Overhaul

Is a it is a freelance engine based on Welsh narrow gauge practice in the UK.

This 'Romulus' type locomotive with an 0-4-0WT is built by Dave Smallbone about 1996.

Pictured on shed in August bank holiday 2013 just prior to steaming for its turn of duty.

2019 - Amy has now enetered the workshop for a boiler retube.

Harwin Harwin – In service

Harwin is based on Lima locomotive works 2-6-2 design from the USA. The Wato engineering castings were imported from Australia a number of years ago, and construction was started by Bill Knox who had completed the chassis and cylinders. After Bill passed away the part completed locomotive moved to Nick and Graham Taylor who were friends of Bill. Harwin was completed in October 2016. Harwin is pictured at Willowbank Station in October 2016 on one of its first running sessions.

Hunslet 'William' is a scale model of the Hunslet Engine Company's 0-4-0ST locomotive of 1898. Hunslet 'William' – In Workshop - Overhaul
is another Hunslet Engine Company's 0-4-0ST locomotive of 1898 based on 'Covercoat' This model was built between 1990 - 1997 to drawings designed by Alan Ruston & supplied by Reeves Ltd Birmingham, the locomotive is scaled at 3" to 1 foot. She was 1st steamed in 1997 and run every season to date, William has outside frames, cylinders and cranks with Stephenson's valve gear motion complete with a freelance double bogie style tender.

Locomotive Tazsheen at Willowbank station Peter Pan – In service
Is another new locomotive that has joined us early in 2014, it is based on a tinkerbell class narrow gauge locomotive. it has a 0-4-2 wheel arrangement, with Joy valve gear and a steel boiler

It has proved to be a very strong and reliable locomotive in service.

Roger Marsh was a pioneer of this type of locomotive and built the original locomotive called Tinkerbell in 1968.

Locomotive Tazsheen at Willowbank station Tazsheen – In Workshop - Overhaul
Is a new locomotive that has joined us in late 2012, it is based on a tinkerbell class narrow gauge locomotive. it has a 0-6-2 wheel arrangement, with Walschaerts valve gear and a copper boiler

It has proved to be a very strong and reliable locomotive in service.

Roger Marsh was a pioneer of this type of locomotive and built the original locomotive called Tinkerbell in 1968.

Tazsheen is currently out of service and in the midle of a rebuild, hopefully it will be back in serivce later this year 2018.

Romulus Tom Snoxell Tom Snoxell – In service
This club engine is named after our late President, it is a freelance engine based on Welsh narrow gauge practice in the UK.  Built by Paul Flood in 1986 at the club. She is the twin of River Rythe pictured further down, she is seen here double heading with Hunslet 'Susie-M' shown above. The locomotives have just left Willowbank station and are are about to pass the level crossing in 1999. This engine was originally Maroon when built, before becoming Green is 2003. in 2018 we decided to revert the locomotive to its original colour of Maroon.

Tom Snoxell is the green engine has just returned from overhaul in July 2003. 

In the back ground is Stephen which can be found in the Standard Gauge loco images.

Pixie is a scale model locomotive from WG Bagnall of Stafford who were best remembered for its small narrow gauge saddle tank locomotives. Pixie – Out of use - Awaiting Overhaul
This is a scale model locomotive from WG Bagnall of Stafford who were best remembered for its small narrow gauge saddle tank locomotives. A significant number of these 2ft gauge are still operational, these locomotives were originally used in a variety of situations such as plantations, collieries, quarries, construction sites, gas works, manufacturing industry and not least, light railways in their own right. Pixie was donated to the society in 2005 following the passing Mr Suggs.

Formidable BR Class 20 "Formidable" – In service
Formidable was constructed between 2007 and 2010. The model has been designed and built by Chris Carder of Roanoke to the vision of one of our members. Roanoke conducted proving tests before delivery on the 7¼" gauge track on site of the preserved Lynton and Barnstable Railway on 14th May 2010. Chris Carder, of Roanoke delivered Formidable to our railway on the morning of 21st May 2010. These pictures show the locomotive prior to public running. It hauled its first passenger train on the 30th June 2010. More pictures and technical details

Electric No2 Western Warrior – In service
this was built in 1981 by Mark Adlington and was originally petrol driven, It was converted to electric traction in 1994. The locomotive is equipped with a 1 horse power motor supplied by 24 volt batteries. She runs on 2 x 4 wheel bogies she is fully braked and is mainly used the work train and for occasional passenger train use.

A totally freelance electric locomotive by John Osbourne is seen here on the ground level track during track day.

Again another locomotive that has been at our railway for over 20 years, and a regular passenger locomotive.

Cromer White built Hymec Petrol locomotive circa 1970 Hymec D7031 – In service
This locomotive has been at Malden since 1971 and was originally owned and manufactured by Cromer White who owned Cromer White railways. It has had two subsequent Malden members as owners who have cared for her, and she is in original condition apart from maintenance and refurbishment work. the loco still retains the original Villeins reversible 9E engine. The significance of the D7031 number, {which is not a real loco number}, is built in 1970 [70] and loco production number 31, the 'D' was for Diesel / Petrol powered unit.
